Lake Massabesic (ma-suh-BEE-sik)Massabesic Lake , Hillsborough and Rockingham cos., SE N.H., 4 mi/6.4 km E of downtown Manchester NH; 4 mi/6.4 km long; 3 mi/4.8 km wide; 42°59'N 71°21'W. Irregularly shaped. Drained from SW end by by Cohas Brook (c.5 mi/8 km long) to Merrimack R.
Lake Massabesic is a name derived from the Native American Indians meaning "The Place of Much Water"

It has a surface area of about 2,500 acres and a gross storage capacity of about 15 billion gallons. Two large ponds are joined at Deer Neck bridge and together they encompass about 28 miles of shoreline. Because the lake provides drinking water for about 125,000 people in the regional Manchester area, sound watershed management is in place. The ban on swimming limits the use of power boats to primarily anglers, thus creating a prime area for sailors, kayakers, and canoers.
